So if someone was baptized in the Catholic Church and no longer practices their faith. This is NOT a good choice. If someone is not Catholic, this too is not a good choice. If someone is excommunicated from the church (which can mean leaving the Catholic Church and publicly joining another non-Catholic church, or has been excommunicated or censured by the Catholic Church).
- Be one (1) male and one (1) female (designated by the parent/guardian or the one to be baptized).
- Be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
- Be Baptized, Confirmed and received First Holy Communion.
- Lead a life in harmony with the Faith and role to be undertaken (this means coming to church weekly).
- Not to be the father or mother of the child/or the one to be baptized.
- Not be be bound by any canonical penalty (legitimately imposed or declared).
The bottom line is that this is a Catholic Sacrament and it does not make any logical sense to ask someone to standup for the faith or be a Godparent to the child or person being baptized when they themselves do not either believe or practice the Catholic faith.
