George Hayek was born in Clifton and moved to Newton in 1939 at the age of 12. At that time, his family joined Saint Joseph Parish. He attended Newton High School and in his senior year, joined the Merchant Marines during World War II. When the war was over, he was serving in the Philippine Island. He also served two years in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.
In 1939, his father opened Hayek's Market where he later served as co-owner with his brother. He was a longtime member of the Don Bosco Council of the Knights of Columbus, serving as previous Grand Knight and Trustee. He is presently a Trustee of Saint Joseph Church. He has participated in many fund raising drives for Saint Joseph Regional School, including the Community Center and Church revnovation, in addition to being a former memeber of the Pope John XXIII High School Education Foundation Committee. He also served a ten year term as the Fredon Township Planning Board Chairman and received the Fredon Township Senior Citizen Award in 1996.
He is married to his beloved wife Agnes who was raised in Haledon. They have five children and seven Grandchildren. All of his children attended Saint Joseph School and two of his Grandchildren attended Saint Joseph Regional School.
George's life experience, joyful demeanor and great sense of humor make him a perfect Trustee for our Parish making the needs of all parishioners are made known to the parish priest.
